Purpose

The study is a historical analysis of the construction of a trade union for school teachers in Sweden - a process which began in 1963.  In particular, this study focuses on the relationship between male and female teachers who initially had separate unions. The study aims to examine and explain why male teachers originally saw female teachers as rivals and then as partners.

Result

The study shows that a series of trend-related conditions led to the merger of the male and female teachers' unions in 1963. The author concludes that, despite the merger, there were still problems in relation to equal opportunities and equal pay for teachers and this is also the case today.

Design

The design is a description based on secondary data analysis.
