Purpose

The topic of the study is kindergarten-home collaboration. The aim is to investigate how the allocation of acknowledgement and disacknowledgement takes place in the meeting between kindergarten and parents with minority cultures, and how these allocations can be understood in relation to theories of power. The research question is: How does the allocation of acknowledgement and disacknowledgement take place in the meeting between kindergarten and parents with minority cultures, and how can this allocation be understood in relation to theories of power?

Result

The study indicates that kindergarten seems to work in a way that makes it easier for certain groups than for others to receive the privileges of acknowledgment. The condition for allocation of acknowledgement to take place is that the allocated possess certain social and cultural resources that are in accordance with the dominating culture of the institution. For those who do not possess these resources, the allocation of acknowledgement appears more difficult. Although the results show that certain minority parents resist disacknowledgement and fight for acknowledgement, the most dominant finding is that the allocation of acknowledgement and disacknowledgement takes place on the majority’s (the kindergarten’s) terms.

Design

The data used in the study consists of interviews with ten pedagogical leaders and ten parents with minority cultures from seven kindergartens in Norway. The analysis of the data material is described as eclectic, as it is not related to a particular analytical technique, but instead uses different strategies more or less freely
