Purpose

The study investigates how kindergarten teachers, through a collegial, experimental approach, can understand, change and improve learning situations in which digital tools are used. The project was carried out in collaboration with a film educator, a co-researching kindergarten colleague and a researcher. The research question was: How can collegial learning processes help teachers understand, change and improve the learning environment and learning situations in which digital tools are used?

Result

The results show how kindergarten teachers, without special experience or interest in digital tools, started using tablets as a learning tool to achieve curriculum objectives regarding communication. The researcher believes that the design-based experimental model led to a deeper reflection among kindergarten teachers and became a focal point for collegial learning processes that can contribute to the development of quality in kindergarten.

Design

The study is rooted in a design-based experiment method (DE), where the staff groups in the two participating kindergartens, together with the researcher and the co-researching kindergarten colleague, designed learning situations in which digital tools were used. Four kindergarten teachers and the co-researching kindergarten teacher were the main informants in the study. Together, they analysed 14 learning situations in which 25 children between the ages of four and five participated. The data material consists of observations, interviews, reflective conversations and field notes.
