Purpose

The report aims to identify the characteristics of men employed in nature kindergartens, and to find positive aspects that can lead to increased recruitment of men for early childhood education and care (ECEC). The study examines the basis of the men's career choices; what men think about the role of kindergarten in society; and how they see themselves as men working in a traditionally female profession.

Result

The study shows that men in nature kindergartens have chosen the profession as child carer more consciously in comparison with other male child carers. They consider early childhood care as a traditional female environment. The study indicates that nature kindergartens satisfy men's needs to be in nature and that men in nature kindergartens are motivated and satisfied with their jobs. The women are also pleased to work with men.

Design

The quantitative part includes 39 ECEC managers, 154 employees from 43 daycare centres and 369 parents from 43 daycare centres. The qualitative study involves a group of men who work at daycare centres.
