Purpose

The study analyses how child carers deal with their professional identity in relation to the requirement of learning by implementing pedagogical teaching framework. The study calls into question how the child carers’ preconceptions as well as professional and ideological basis conform with the learning requirement, and thus analyses how child carers deal with their own professional identity. The study asks the following question:  How is an identity constructed in a specific situation in relation to the requirement for learning, and what are the barriers and potentials that lie in combining a learning aspect with the experience of one's own pedagogical identity?

Result

The authors conclude that the development of a professional identity is a complicated process and that there is a need for further research into the issue.

Design

The study is conducted with an ethnographic design. Observations and focus group interviews have been carried out with staff at two daycare centres.
