Purpose

The aim of the study is to describe and acquire empirical knowledge about collaborative practices between kindergartens and parents, health centres, social workers and voluntary actors. The investigation is divided into two parts: 1) A systematic mapping of research and literature. 2) A systematic mapping of collaborative practices between Danish kindergartens and parents, health centres, social workers and voluntary actors.  Sub 2) 13 specific examples of collaborative practices are also presented in Danish municipalities, as well as an assessment of the extent to which these can be described as good.

Result

Both previous research and the study’s mapping show that parents are the ones who collaborate most often with kindergartens, while there are few examples of collaborative practices between voluntary actors and kindergartens. However, the researchers find, both in previous research and in the empirical investigation, a number of collaborative practices between kindergartens, health centres and social workers. Several of the practices involve interdisciplinary collaboration between two or more groups of actors, in which the parents are most often involved. The practices may involve collaboration on specific activities, in which skilled workers collaborate with children and families, or the coordination of the work of various professional bodies. The results show that such collaborative practices are more often about guidance and coordination between skilled workers and parents, rather than specific activities involving children and parents (such as parental support or activities that support the child’s development). The study shows that there is considerable variation in the degree of documentation and evaluations of collaborative practices.

Design

The researchers have mapped research and literature, where, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, a systematic search has been carried out in 11 databases and on 17 websites. In addition, data is included from interviews and surveys with kindergarten coordinators and skilled workers who have in-depth knowledge of the 13 selected practices.
