Purpose

The ‘Come Outside’ project organised by Children & Nature - Denmark aims to support and develop educators’ use of nature in Danish kindergartens. This overview of knowledge is based on comprehensive mapping of the current use of nature in Danish kindergartens. The overview aims to convey knowledge about the importance and use of nature for children aged 0-6 years old, with a particular focus on knowledge related to the children’s time in kindergarten. The research question was: What type of knowledge exists regarding the importance of nature for young children’s (0-6 years old) well-being, development, learning and formation in Nordic research?

Result

The conclusion of the literature review was that kindergartens deliberately and systematically contribute to giving more and more children access to green spaces. The research showed that pedagogical work within nature and in natural surroundings promoted children’s well-being, development, learning and formation.

Design

The researchers conducted a systematic literature search in several databases in order to create an overview of the field of research. Out of 1095 database search results, 32 articles were included in the overview of knowledge.
