Purpose

The study investigates how single women who have had children through donor-assisted reproduction (solo mothers) define their own family form, and how they position their own family in relation to other families when describing how they want kindergarten to reflect and highlight their family form. The research questions are: 1. How do solo mothers define their own family form, and how do they position their own family in relation to other families when describing how they want the kindergarten to reflect and highlight their family form? 2. How can the wishes of solo mothers be linked to the theory of anti-oppressive pedagogy?

Result

The results show that the solo mothers perceived their own family as natural, normal and equal. The mothers did not want to focus on their own family as something special or on the fact that the child was conceived through assisted reproduction. The mothers preferred to focus on the diversity of families in general when the kindergarten worked to reflect and highlight different family forms.

Design

The researchers invited solo mothers to write a text in an anonymous online form. The form was posted in an online forum for solo mothers. The forum was established because single, heterosexual women did not feel comfortable in forums for lesbian women. The forum has around 475 members. 33 solo mothers chose to complete the form.
