Purpose

The aim of the study is to learn more about how young children experience reading and writing (literacy practices) in kindergarten. The research question is: How do children create opinions about reading and writing through the use of various social, material and bodily resources in literacy events?

Result

Although the children had limited experience of literacy practices, they nevertheless created an opinion about how, where, and with what material such practices were performed. Literacy was not only a skill, but also a way to learn how to handle objects in different places and move the body in its surroundings. Children's opinion about literacy also included aspects of breaking with the norms that surrounded these practices. The children challenged and questioned established ways of writing and reading in kindergarten.

Design

Reading and writing activities were observed and documented using cameras and field notes. The observations were made in four different kindergartens and focused on the actions of one to three-year-old children.
