Purpose

On the basis of the early childhood educators' perceptions, the purpose of this study is to examine how the presentation of history and traditions at daycare centres (barnehagen) can contribute to the child's process of development.

Result

The study concludes that the presentation of history and traditions has the potential to encourage daycare centres to work with the child's process of development. The study shows that early childhood educators state that the reason for working with the presentation of history and traditions is that it contributes to the children's process of development. As part of general education, presentation of history and traditions will take place in the gap between material development (mastering a special knowledge content) and formal development (development of personal characteristics, e.g. critical thinking). This means that presentation of history and traditions is about learning from something (formal development) as well as about learning about something (material development). In this way, learning about the past can lead to personal growth, development of critical thinking and ability to make a moral assessment.

Design

The study is based on qualitative interviews with early childhood educators in five daycare centres located in three different Norwegian municipalities. The interviews focus on how the early childhood educators talk about how they work with the presentation of history and traditions, and the early childhood educators' perception of the child's understanding and outcome of this presentation. The daycare centres were strategically selected because they have worked systematically with history projects for long periods. Through the interviews, the study analysed how the early childhood educators talk about their work with the presentation of history and traditions, how they assess the child's outcome, and the understandings of history expressed by the children. These categories were analysed on the basis of a theory on development.
