Purpose

The study addresses the practical nature of morality in everyday kindergarten life. More specifically, the study investigates the moral work that takes place in interactions between children, and between children and kindergarten teachers, in situations where they deal with breaches of moral orders/messages, such as breaking the rules in activities with their peers.

Result

The study demonstrates the moral rules that children perceive as being applicable among themselves and between themselves and adults. The study shows how children conduct moral work and discuss and form part of complex moral rules in everyday activities. The results show that the children’s interactional moral work is part of how they socialise in shared relationships. Children’s moral work and rules can be both similar to and different from the norms and perspectives of adults.

Design

The study is based on video-ethnographic investigations in a Swedish kindergarten, where video recordings have been made of activities such as games, playing and circle sessions. From an ethnomethodological and conversation analysis approach, video recordings of a handful of such activities were analysed in detail, focusing on conversation and body language in interaction with a materialistic environment.
