Putting scaffolding into actions: Preschool teachers’ scaffolding actions using Interactive Whiteboard

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate kindergarten teachers’ actions to support children’s learning processes in connection with the use of interactive boards. 

Result

The results of the study highlighted 21 ‘scaffolding-building’ actions by kindergarten teachers: 

to concretise; to ask questions; to instruct; to provide room; to confirm facts (affirming); to provide feedback; to invite; to watch; to laugh together; to approach; to stand/sit next to; to simplify; to fill in what is missing; to confirm the child (confirming); to participate; to challenge perceptions; to challenge thoughts; to explain facts; to show; to explain solutions; to reshow. 

 

Design

Five kindergarten teachers and 22 children aged 4–6 were observed using video over a period of five months in 2017–2018.
