Purpose

The purpose of the investigation is to explore the extent to which Danish kindergartens meet the principles set out in the ‘Guide to healthier food in day care institutions’ recommended by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, which aims to ensure that breakfast, lunch and snacks are healthy. In addition, the study will describe the structural framework of the food programmes.

Result

Overall, the results show that 40% of the recommendations are well implemented in Danish kindergartens that have an in-house food programme. Recommendations for beverages and lunch dishes are best implemented, where 70% and 60% are well implemented, respectively. Nevertheless, the investigation emphasises that there are also a number of areas where kindergartens can do more work, so that the nutritional quality of food is in accordance with the recommendations.

Design

The study is conducted as a cross-sectional study via an online self-administered questionnaire that was sent by e-mail to Danish kindergartens in January 2018. The sample consists of responses from 1053 kindergartens that have an in-house food programme, i.e. the children receive at least one prepared meal during the day.
