Purpose

The study investigates how a staff group explores and experiments with the play environment in their kindergarten, and how their active participation in changes made to the play environment can create motivation and understanding of the importance of environment for pedagogical practice. The purpose was to design alternative solutions to traditional established playrooms.

Result

The findings show that one's own bodily experiences and active participation in collective processes over time create motivation for changes in the pedagogical practice of the staff. Increased competence in experimenting with play environments leads to intrinsically regulated motivation. The staff are motivated by the children's enthusiasm, which in turn leads to a greater degree of involvement for the children in their own play environment. This creates a culture of sharing for creativity in the adaptation of the children's play environment.

Design

The study was conducted in a kindergarten with 145 children and 40 employees, where the staff were to create their own interventions with new play environments and scenography. The data material consists of observations made during two staff meetings, two focus group interviews and a research diary.
