Purpose

In the article, the author investigates kindergarten design visions from the time when they were developed as part of the Swedish welfare state in the 1970s, and discusses what view of childhood and society the visions were based on.

Result

The analysis shows an ambitious vision regarding the design of kindergartens with the aim of providing children with a diverse and stimulating environment that supported their independence and freedom of choice. Unlike the design of kindergartens in Europe during the post-war period, Swedish kindergartens were not designed in response to experiences from the world wars. Inspired by the theories of Jean Piaget and Erik Erikson, and based on the rationality of the Swedish welfare state, this kindergarten design was rather intended as a remedy for the inadequacy of what was perceived as an anonymous, sterile and lifeless modern society.

Design

The researcher analyses reports, booklets and teaching materials published by the Swedish central authorities.
