The study investigates quality in Danish kindergartens with a focus on whether disadvantaged children benefit from attending kindergarten from an inclusive perspective.

Resultat

The results show that the learning environment in the kindergartens safeguards the children’s social and emotional well-being and development. At the same time, the kindergartens score low on learning activities, which shows that the kindergartens do not promote children’s cognitive development.

Design

The data material consists of observations collected using the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS-3) in 88 kindergartens in four Danish municipalities. The observations were conducted in 2017-2018. In each kindergarten, 16-24 children between three and five years of age were observed for three hours (a total of 119 observations).
