Purpose

The study sheds light on both parents' and project staff's experiences of the Bokstart Gotland project, which aims to increase reading aloud to younger children.

The research questions are:

  1. What impact has the project had on parents' and project staff's attitudes to reading to younger children?
  2. How have project staff in child health, libraries, open kindergartens and kindergartens collaborated to achieve the goal of increasing reading among younger children?
  3. How meaningful have the various project activities seemed in relation to the resources they have required?
  4. What success factors and obstacles to success in achieving the overall goal of increasing reading among younger children can be identified within Bokstart Gotland, and to what extent are these common to reading initiatives in general or more specific to this specific project?

Result

The results show that the project is appreciated and yields results in that parents better understand the importance of reading to younger children. Parents start reading earlier, more often, and in a more interactive way with their children because of the project. The author of the report believes this contributes to better conditions for the child's development of reading skills before they start school. The project also reached parents who otherwise did not read much to their children, and it also led to more frequent and quality reading. The book gifts were highly appreciated, and the books were actively used in families.

Design

The data material was collected through a questionnaire given to parents at the child's 18-month follow-up check at the child health centre (160 questionnaires) and through 22 interviews with project staff working in project management, child health centres, libraries, open kindergartens and kindergartens. The results were analysed using descriptive statistics (for the questionnaire) and by using thematic content analysis (for the interviews).
