Purpose

The purpose of this study is to map the variation in documentation methods and forms from all the daycare centres in a Swedish municipality. The part of the study introduced in this chapter contains material from daycare centres with a Montessori and Reggio Emilia profile.

Result

The study shows there are 11 daycare centres in the municipality with a Reggio Emilia profile, and that they have the most extensive documentation compared with other daycare centres in the municipality. Additionally, there are two Montessori institutions in the municipality. The researchers found that none of the daycare centres in the municipality, other than the Swedish-speaking Christian daycare centres, have a declared religious or linguistic/cultural profile. This seems to reflect the nature of the municipality as traditional, ethnically Swedish segregated middle class, and rural. In addition, the study shows that the content of individual development plans are based on standardised or semi-structured templates. In the Montessori institutions, the plans are organised according to subjects such as mathematics, Swedish and history. Additionally, the plans are organised with the headings 'practical', 'sensory' and 'social'. The concept behind Montessori institutions is that the institution will learn to assess and place the child according to how well he or she tackles the various objectives.

Design

The data was collected in Skåne, southern Sweden, and consists of documents from three levels: municipal, institutional and individual. Documents include profile descriptions of the daycare centres on the municipality's website and forms for individual development plans. These have been analysed on the basis of critical textual analysis within the framework of a pragmatic discourse analysis.
