Syfte

The study investigates how multilingual kindergarten teachers with immigrant backgrounds create subjectivity while manoeuvring between expectations from multiple actors and existing norms in society.

Resultat

The multilingual kindergarten teacher uses her mathematical skills, her experiences as an immigrant, her multilingual expertise and her didactic skills to facilitate equal opportunities for all the children in the group, and to create new teaching methods and materials. At the same time, the pedagogical and didactic choices she makes are limited by her colleagues’ assessments of her mathematical skills and her multilingual and multicultural background.

Design

The study is part of a doctoral thesis on how kindergarten teachers interpret and carry out the curriculum objectives for mathematics education in Swedish kindergartens. The study follows one multilingual kindergarten teacher who teaches mathematics. Data collection took place through observations and interviews.
