Purpose

The purpose of the study is to gain increased knowledge about affordances in play where experiences of well-being and physical outdoor activity occur simultaneously in the child. The research question is: How can affordances in kindergarten outdoor environments promote physical activity and well-being at the same time?

Result

The results support previous research on the topic, which shows that children benefit in different ways from free outdoor play: Boys and older children showed high levels of well-being during outdoor free play more often than the other children, and 13 children showed no concurrent sense of well-being and physical activity during the observation period.

Design

The data material was collected through systematic and arbitrary video operations with field notes of kindergarten children’s free play in outdoor surroundings at eight different kindergartens in Norway. The data collection took place over a week on two occasions and involved ten children aged three or four from each kindergarten (five boys and five girls). The data material was then categorised and encoded before finally being analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods.
